Waterproofing and Corrosion Protection Concrete Admixture

PART 1 - General

1.01 Summary

  1. This section specifies an inorganic complex alkaline earth silicate liquid admixture for waterproofing and the protection of reinforcing steel, prestressed strands, and accessories against chloride induced corrosion.
  2. Other specification sections which directly relate to the work of this Section include, but are not limited to, the following:

    1. Section 03300 - Cast-In-Place Concrete
    2. Section 03365 - Post Tensioned Concrete
    3. Section 03400 - Precast Concrete
1.02 Submittals

  1. Submit manufacturer’s product data, installation instructions, and recommendations for material.
  2. Submit the following data and certification for the inorganic complex alkaline earth silicate admixture:

    1. The admixture-modified concrete shall be water tight under hydrostatic pressure up to 7 atmospheres when tested in accordance with Corps of Engineers test CRC-C48.
    2. The admixture modified concrete shall reduce chloride ion penetration when tested in accordance with AASTHTO Designations: T259 and T260.
    3. The admixture-modified concrete shall have a lower heat of hydration when tested in accordance with ASTM C186.
    4. The admixture-modified concrete shall reduce alkali-silica reaction when tested in accordance with ASTM C441.
    5. The admixture-modified concrete shall reduce length change (shrinkage) when tested in accordance with ASTM C157.
    6. The admixture-modified concrete shall increase compressive strength (ASTM C39) and increase flexural strength (ASTM C78) when tested against control concrete having equal slump and air content.
    7. The admixture-modified concrete shall increase bond stress when tested against control concrete having equal slump and air content in accordance with ASTM C234.
    8. Inorganic complex alkaline earth silicate admixture manufacturer must have a minimum of 20 years experience in the manufacture of such product.
1.03 Quality Assurance

  1. Concrete admixture shall be manufactured by a firm with a minimum of 20 years experience in the production of inorganic complex alkaline earth silicate admixtures for concrete. Manufactures proposed for use but not named in these specifications shall submit evidence of ability to meet all requirements specified, and include a list of projects of similar design completed more than 15 years ago.
  2. A pre-construction conference shall be held two weeks prior to the start-up of field operations to review installation and establish procedures for the handling, placing, finishing, and curing of the specified admixture modified concrete.
  3. A manufacturer’s representative shall be present for project start-up during initial concrete placement. Engineer may waive requirement for manufacturer’s representative if Contractor provides sufficient evidence that producer and finisher have adequate experience with admixture required.
  4. Trial mixes shall be performed on all proposed mix designs to insure that the concrete mixes meet all requirements set forth in the specification.

PART 2 - Products

2.01 Manufacture

  1. Provide the inorganic complex alkaline earth silicate liquid admixture IPANEX as manufactured by Cement Chemistry Systems, LP.
2.02 Concrete Mix
  1. IPANEX shall be dosed at a rate of 13.8 fluid ounces per 100 wt. of cementitious per cubic yard of concrete.
  2. All IPANEX modified concrete shall be batched, delivered, and discharged in accordance with ASTM C94.
  3. Concrete shall have a minimum ultimate 28-day compressive strength of not less than ______ lb. per square inch unless otherwise noted on the drawings or specifications herein.
  4. For freeze-thaw durability follow ACI 318 freezing and thawing exposure requirements. All concrete shall contain ______% +/- ______% entrained air.
  5. All concrete shall have a maximum ______ water-to-cementitious ratio.
  6. Additional concrete admixtures conforming to ASTM C494 standard may be used and required.
