Additive Doubles Life of Highway Bridge Decks

March 10, 2009

Philadelphia, PA -
A paper entitled "Influence of Alkaline Earth Silicate Admixture on Durability of Pennsylvania Turnpike Bridges" was presented at the annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board ten years ago.  Researchers showed that bridge decks manufactured with IPANEX had reacted with cement to produce a refined structure with fewer and smaller spaces between cement grains, making the concrete less penetrable by water and chloride ions introduced by deicing salt.

Eric Dirks, President of Cement Chemistry Systems, commented "The interstate highway bridge decks tested on the Pennsylvania Turnpike represent some of the heaviest traffic and salt applications in the country.  The data continues to show today that the decks are virtually new, some 35 years after the bridge decks were constructed, and show no signs of onset of corrosion.  Meanwhile, bridge decks in the immediate area constructed without IPANEX are already targeted for replacement and concrete between the surface and the embedded steel is peeling off, exposing the steel to air.  Considering the amount of stimulus dollars set aside for bridge repair and construction, IPANEX continues to be the only choice for extending and designing a maximum bridge deck life economically."

IPANEX reduces the ability of chlorides and water to penetrate concrete surfaces and structures, which delays the onset of corrosion and increases the design life of bridges.  A recent study of I-99 bridge decks showed that IPANEX had the potential to extend the design life of a bridge deck to 100 years.

Cement Chemistry Systems announces completed expansion.

February 12, 2009

Philadelphia, PA - Concrete admixture provider, Cement Chemistry Systems (CCS), updated suppliers and customers on the state of the concrete admixtures business.  "No doubt, the current economic environment is challenging." said Eric Dirks, President, CCS.  "IPANEX continues to lead by example in the concrete admixtures space.  Our products are specified in today's leading commercial and infrastructure projects, and we are well positioned as a small business to respond to infrastructure project demands going forward."  Dirks continued by saying, "As a leading manufacturer of concrete admixtures, our proof of performance is clear in the thousands of structures we have protected over the last 30 years.  Distributors and engineers must agree, as our Nationwide network continues to expand, in addition to the increase in the projects we are specified on."
